Obama Should Have Addressed Republicans' Efforts to Disenfranchise Voters

Yahoo News asked readers and contributors to briefly respond to passages from Barack Obama's State of the Union address. Here's one reaction.

Obama on voting problems: "We must all do our part to make sure our God-given rights are protected here at home. That includes our most fundamental right as citizens: the right to vote. When any Americans - no matter where they live or what their party - are denied that right simply because they can't wait for five, six, seven hours just to cast their ballot, we are betraying our ideals. That's why, tonight, I'm announcing a non-partisan commission to improve the voting experience in America."

My response: It's not just a matter of improving "the voting experience," though. This isn't a technical problem, like not being able to install an app. The Republican party has been systematically disenfranchising voters, especially black voters, in whatever way they can, short of reinstating poll taxes and literacy tests.

They know there isn't a voter fraud problem. But they're intimidating people anyway, and trying to keep them from voting. Local leaders even admit that that's what they're doing. Why can't Obama?

Maybe he knows right-leaning Americans won't believe him. But then, they also don't believe that he worships the Christian god, no matter how much code language ("God-given rights") he uses to show that he's part of their club. He should stop trying to persuade them.
