Germany detains four men suspected of unification day plot (Reuters)

COLOGNE, Germany (Reuters) ? German police said on Sunday they had detained four men they suspected may have been planning an attack Monday at celebrations marking the 21st anniversary of German reunification.

A police spokesman in Cologne, Christoph Gilles, told Reuters that three of the men, aged 22 to 27, were detained in Bonn while police in Hesse state said a fourth man was detained in Offenbach.

"We detained three suspects from the Islamist spectrum in Bonn Saturday afternoon," Gilles said. "They are suspected of illegally obtaining weapons."

Gilles said police in Cologne received information that they had illegally acquired weapons ahead of Monday's celebrations in Bonn, which is about 30 km (18 miles) south of Cologne.

"We had information (about the illegal weapons) and we took action based on that, also in light of the fact of the upcoming German Unity Day festivities," Gilles said.

Gilles said they did not find any weapons in searches of the suspects' apartments. The suspect in Offenbach was released while police were still investigating the three men from Bonn, the former West German capital.

The suspects had been under observation for quite some time by German police authorities, one official said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Christian Wulff will be attending the Unity Day celebrations in Bonn Monday.

"We are now investigating whether and what sort of corresponding plans there might have been in regards to that," Gilles said, referring to the Unity Day celebration.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry in Berlin said they had also been involved in the investigation.

California Poverty Level Falls Short Of Basic Needs

Story courtesy of California Watch
By Joanna Lin

A family of four in California would need an average of more than $63,000 a year ? nearly triple the federal poverty level ? to cover its basic needs, according to an analysis of the state's cost of living to be released today.

The 2011 Self-Sufficiency Standard, released by the Insight Center for Community Economic Development, a national research organization, shows that in every county in California, the federal poverty level falls short of meeting basic needs: housing, food, child care, health care, transportation and other essential household expenses.

Taking all these costs into consideration, the standard calculates the minimum annual income required for 156 family compositions in each county. The pre-tax income needed to make ends meet for a family of two working, married adults; a preschooler; and a primary school-aged child ranged from $53,775 in Tulare County to $86,629 in Marin County. For a family of four, the 2011 federal poverty level, which is based on the cost of food alone and does not take into account regional cost-of-living differences in the contiguous United States, is $22,350.

"The federal poverty guidelines miss this whole population of individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet," said Jenny Chung Mejia, an attorney and program manager for the center. "Essentially, what happens is they earn too much to qualify but yet don't have enough to make ends meet; they fall in this sort of policy-benefits gap."

Many people and entities, including policymakers, public agencies, philanthropic organizations, advocates and service providers, use the Self-Sufficiency Standard as a benchmarking tool to gauge the needs of their communities.

In affluent counties, needs often go unrecognized, Chung Mejia said.

"The public has this perception that if you live in Marin County, for example, you're not going to be poor," she said.

While figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show 9.1 percent of the population in Marin County lives below the poverty level, the county's median household income ? $83,867 ? is lower than its Self-Sufficiency Standard.

Even in counties where median income exceeds the Self-Sufficiency Standard, advocates say the cost of basic needs can be striking.

In Santa Clara County, for example, the median household income, $85,002, is just slightly higher than the Self-Sufficiency Standard for a family of two adults, a preschooler and a school-aged child. According to the standard, the cost of food for such a family ? $852 a month, based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's low-cost food plan ? eats up more than 12 percent of household income.

More than 91,500 students in the county are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school. But to qualify for the programs, a student's household income must be at or less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level ? or $41,347.50 for a family of four.

"There's this huge gap," said Dana Bunnett, director of Kids in Common, a program of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte that advocates for children in Santa Clara County. "We really have needs for families that go beyond those federal guidelines."

Although the Self-Sufficiency Standard accounts for more basic costs than the federal poverty level does, it misses others that many Californians would consider essential ? including cell phone and Internet service.

"That just makes it all the more crazy," Chung Mejia said. "We're just putting forth a very, very modest budget."

Jim Bush: Putting a Price on Customer Service | Atomic Stock Picks

Businesses that are looking to grow often consider tried and true strategies: doing more business with existing customers, finding new ones and investing in product development. But one area many don?t consider nearly enough is customer service. And the evidence shows they could be leaving real money on the table as a result.

The 2011 American Express Global Customer Service Barometer found that 70% of American consumers are willing to spend an average of 13% more with companies they believe provide excellent customer service. This is up nearly 50% from even from just a year ago ? when six in ten (58%) said they?d spend an average of 9% more with companies that deliver great service.

In spite of the growth opportunity good service affords, many companies don?t appear to be getting the message. Four in ten (42%) said companies are helpful but don?t do anything extra to keep their business, and one in five (22%) think companies take their business for granted.

And when a company?s service isn?t up to par, consumers are more than willing to take action. In fact, our research found that consumers would tell nearly twice as many people after they?ve had a negative customer experience, compared to when they have a positive one (16 vs. 9). In addition to taking bad service ?viral,? 60% of consumers also say they?d be willing to shift their business to a brand or company for a better service experience.

It all adds up to the fact that in today?s environment, getting service right is increasingly becoming more than a nice to do; it?s a must do for the bottom-line. Relegating service to a back-office role seen more as a cost than investment can curb incremental business from existing customers and increase the risk that they jump ship to a competitor.

For example, each year Forrester Research recognizes organizations that are committed to service through their Voice of the Customer Awards. Unsurprisingly, they noted in a recent report that each of the 2011 winners attributed impressive business results to their VoC efforts, ranging from increases in customer retention to increases in revenue per customer. These companies were able to directly tie a focus on quality service and truly listening to their customers to tangible business metrics ? proving that a customer-centric strategy benefits not only their customers, but their shareholders as well.

We have seen at American Express that it?s not even necessarily about spending more on service. It?s about giving it the focus it deserves and spending smarter. We undertook a global effort to reinvent our approach to service about five years ago, and have seen increases in every major metric we use to measure service quality since. Meanwhile, our absolute servicing investment in 2011 is below the servicing investment that we made in 2006. We made it a priority, eliminated inefficient practices, and have seen our business benefit hugely as a result.

What does all of this mean? Organizations that dismiss investing in service are missing out on a unique opportunity to drive growth. But those that focus on service will reap the benefits of increased customer loyalty, more positive word of mouth and ultimately, greater customer spending over time.

And the numbers are there to prove it.

How to Convince Your Child to Workout | Security World News

Number of View: 28

Allocating time for consistent physical activities is critical for every family and it needs to be put as the number one priority on your child?s daily routine. In comparison to two decades ago, most kids today are inactive due to change in lifestyle. For instance, children no longer need to go out in order to socialize; they can easily do it from their PCs.

With this in mind, how then do you convince your child to start working out for the sake of their health? Unlike what you may have heard, convincing your child to start working out is much easier than convincing them to take out the trash. With proper planning you can discover means through which you can assimilate exercising with the time you spend with your kids. It does not matter how old your child is, there is a means of finding time to exercise. Discussed herein, are tips and guidelines on how you can get your child to exercise:

Age Bracket: Kids in pre-school

-????????? Try to make a workout program whilst they are sleeping. There are home workout videos you can use. If they are sick and tired of being indoors, then you can take them outside for rope jumping, strolling or jogging.

-????????? Grasp a stroller and go to the park for a brisk stroll. Alternatively, you can purchase a stroller for a little flexibility. If you have a stroller, then you can walk or jog at a faster pace.

-????????? If you have young kids, then you can utilize a back carrier to carry them around whilst walking. Whereas this may seem quite challenging, it is of benefit as the extra weight will enable you to burn more calories.

-????????? Children love to play. You can take advantage of this by putting on some music and dancing along to the tunes. You will be surprised at how frequently your child will be looking ahead to this.

-????????? If you are in the park, then you can device several games to play together, for example, tag.

-????????? If your child knows how to ride a bicycle, then the two of you can relish riding together.

Age Bracket: Kids in grade school

-????????? Kids at this age love to roller-blade. You too can buy a pair of roller-bladders and join your kids in rollerblading.

-????????? Make weekends a family biking day. This way it will be standard to go out for a bike ride in the park.

Take your kids to the park during the weekend and take part in the games

UN rights office criticizes Bahrain sentences (AP)

GENEVA ? The U.N. human rights office on Friday questioned the fairness of a Bahrain court that sentenced an anti-government protester to death and gave lengthy prison sentences to medical staff who treated the injured during the country's uprising.

Bahrain's military-run National Safety Court reportedly gave defendants and their lawyers little time to prepare, failed to investigate allegations of torture and conducted some trials in just 10 minutes, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said.

The court sentenced one protester to death for killing a policeman, and gave 20 doctors and nurses prison sentences ranging from five to 15 years. At least 33 protesters ? among them union leaders and professional athletes ? also received sentences of three years or more.

"For such harsh sentences to be handed down to civilians in a military court with serious due process irregularities raises severe concerns," Rupert Colville, told reporters in Geneva.

"We understand ? according to our sources that we trust ? that defendants have had limited access to lawyers, and in most cases lawyers definitely did not have enough time to prepare their clients' defense properly."

The U.N. human rights office called on the government to ensure that those detained were charged with "a recognizable criminal offense."

Colville said some of the defendants appeared to have been found guilty of nothing more than exercising their right to free speech.

Hundreds of activists have been imprisoned since March when Bahrain's rulers imposed martial law to deal with protests by the country's Shiite majority demanding greater rights and freedoms.

The trial of the medical staff has been closely watched by rights groups, which have criticized Bahrain's use of the special court whose military and civilian judges are appointed by the commander of Bahrain's defense force.

The World Health Organization also questioned the prosecution of the medical staff, but refrained from outright criticism of the Bahrain government.

"Health care workers have a moral and ethical obligation to treat the injured regardless of their political affiliation and they should never be punished for doing what is required by this obligation," said WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib.

The U.N. statements echoed concerns expressed Thursday by the U.S. State Department.

Spokesman Mark Toner said the United States, which has stationed the Navy's 5th Fleet in the Gulf nation, was "deeply disturbed" by the sentencing of the medics.

"We understand that the cases can be appealed and transferred to a civilian appellate court," Toner said. "We continue to urge the Bahraini government to abide by its commitment to transparent judicial proceedings, including a fair trial, access to attorneys, and verdicts based on credible evidence conducted in full accordance with Bahraini law and Bahrain's international legal obligations."
