A weak open on Wall Street on gloomy IMF forecast

Another dire prediction about global economic growth is sending stocks lower on Wall Street in early trading.

The U.S. corporate earnings season is also shaping up to be weakest in years.

The combination sent indexes slightly lower shortly after the opening bell Tuesday. The Dow Jones industrial average was off 20 points at 13,564. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost two points to 1,454 and the Nasdaq gave up 10 points to 3,101.

The International Monetary Fund said the global economy is weakening and that the downturn afflicting developing nations has begun to spread.

After the closing bell, aluminum maker Alcoa becomes the first major U.S. company to report third-quarter results. Analysts are expecting earnings at S&P 500 companies to decline overall for the first time in three years.

Ocean Dunes? big golf gamble

FLORENCE ? The future seems bright for Ocean Dunes Golf Links, the picturesque and challenging 18-hole public golf course that wends its way through the dunes and trees on the eastern side of Florence.

It was purchased in March by the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, owners of the adjacent Three Rivers Casino and Hotel, to broaden the casino?s financial base by attracting more customers as a destination resort.

As early as 2014, when the casino?s hotel offerings will be expanded to 200 rooms, from 93, and an aquatics center is scheduled to be added as well, the golf course will have a revamped design ? at the very least, some version of the current No. 14 hole, with its looming ghost tree, will become No. 1, because of its close proximity to the casino, setting up No. 13 as the new No. 18, a strong finishing hole that ends back at the casino.

But the changes at Ocean Dunes will involve more than just renumbering the holes, and Ocean Dunes officials say some big-name golf course architects are excited about the potential of a redesign, one that will include a new clubhouse next to the casino and a new putting green as well as a much-needed practice range, with covered stalls for inclement weather.

The entire project ? hotel expansion, aquatics center, golf course improvement ? is budgeted at $16 million to $20 million, with no specific breakout offered for the golf course alterations. However, the bottom line is that while the golf course was purchased, for $5 million, to be a good deal for the casino, the casino, and the revenues behind it, could be a very good deal for Ocean Dunes.

?If you?re a golfer, someone who wanted to play Ocean Dunes, the best thing that happened to this golf course was someone like the tribe purchasing it, because they have the financial wherewithal, as well as the desire, to make it a top-flight amenity,? said Mike Rose, chief operating officer of the casino and hotel.

?It?s not going to be the best of the best, but when you come out here, our goal will always be to exceed your expectations. Being a normal public golf course isn?t acceptable to us in the long term. It?s going to be something that when people leave, they say ?I?m coming back,? because it exceeded their expectations on all of the little things as well as the big things.?

In that regard, the future is also now for Ocean Dunes, because the new ownership has already had an effect, hiring director of golf Bob Rannow, who came over in July after 11 years at nearby nationally recognized Sandpines Golf Course, and implementing a number of improvements.

?This opportunity came up and I saw something that could become something great,? said Rannow, who has been a fixture at Sandpines. ?There?s lots of different options in the redesign category. As it sits right now, it?s a very exciting golf course, a very fun golf course. ... With the momentum of the tribe and the casino behind it, there?s a lot of huge energy there to move it into a new level.?

From new paint in the clubhouse, to upgraded food service, to new on-course signs that were installed late last month, Ocean Dunes has been freshened for the short-term even with more dramatic changes looming in the long-term.

?First and foremost, we hired Bob,? Rose said of Rannow. ?That was a great coup for us. We have someone with a great reputation coming from a great resort. It adds credence to the fact that we?re serious about it. We?ve made it very clear to our membership and the owners around here that we have no intention of doing a housing development here. This is a golf course golf resort. And that makes people happy ...

?We spent $30,000 just painting this place, cleaning it up, fixing it up, so that our present customer who comes here today can say ?OK, you mean something, you care about our feelings.? I know it doesn?t sound like a lot, but when you come in and the bathrooms are clean and new and we have food seven days a week, there?s a sense of pride.?

On the course, Rannow said, the greens have been improved dramatically; by next spring, tee boxes will also be improved. And in several areas, encroaching vegetation and trees have been removed to make some of the course?s infamously narrow fairways more playable, and to give golfers more room around the greens.

Hacking back the overgrowth, workers would fill a five-gallon bucket with lost golf balls almost daily.

A hidden gem

Originally opened as a nine-hole golf course called Rhodo Dunes in the early 1960s, the course was purchased in 1989 by Bill Robinson, the noted designer of golf courses in the Northwest and Canada whose long list of other courses includes the redesign of Shadow Hills Country Club near Junction City.

Around 1991, Robinson added nine holes to what became Ocean Dunes Golf Links, and he further remodeled the course in 1997 that was notoriously short and narrow.

By then, however, Ocean Dunes had been overshadowed by Sandpines, which in 1993 was deemed the best new public golf course in America, and became the destination-course of choice in the Florence area. Meanwhile, Ocean Dunes endured as a ?locals? course with a reputation for quirkiness because of the relatively short holes ? from the white tees, the course plays to 5,613 yards, with five of the par 4s measuring 301 yards or less ? narrow fairways and frequent blind shots over the fairway-covered dunes to hidden landing areas or greens.

Certainly, the names given the holes in the course description ? such as ?Slippery,? ?Hide & Seek,? ?Peek a Boo,? and ?Twister? ? didn?t give golfers any reason for optimism on the tee box. But by the same token, Ocean Dunes? reputation might have been a bad rap ? after all, don?t golfers spend a good deal of money to travel to Ireland and Scotland to play courses where greens are obscured by the dunes, and where windy conditions have a major impact on club selection?

Ocean Dunes does not, in fact, have an ocean view, and thus can?t compare with such spectacular venues as the Bandon Dunes courses farther south on the Pacific Coast. However, if you took the challenging par 3 holes at Ocean Dunes ? downhill, or across a chasm choked by trees ? and put any of them on one of the Bandon courses, they?d no doubt be acclaimed for their design.

The golfing mantra ?to think your way around the course? might have been coined with Ocean Dunes in mind.

?A few years back, the course probably was too narrow and difficult to play, and if you were someone who wanted to grip and rip you were going to lose a lot more balls than keep them,? Rose said. ?But I think with a couple of changes we have made and will continue to make, it becomes more player-friendly. It?s not a very long course, but it?s a fair course. With the tribe?s and the casino?s resources behind it, it?s only going to get better.?

The future

In a depressed golf industry, it figures that even a modest redesign would attract interest from golf course architects, and Rannow said early indications are that will be the case with Ocean Dunes, and that some of the redesign proposals could be stunning.

?I?ve heard a great deal from designers who know a lot about golf that there?s a pretty significant excitement level on their end,? Rannow said. ?And that is exciting. ... What do we know about links golf? We know that it needs to be built on sand. We know that the topography needs to be to a certain design level. We know you need to have X amount of acres to create a championship course. Are those elements here. ...??

Perhaps, and so the future Ocean Dunes could have more than just a new name.

?We don?t have the marquee name right now, like Sandpines or Bandon Dunes, but it will continue to get better,? Rose said. ?And I think eventually when we move the clubhouse and attach it to the (casino) facility, the Three Rivers Casino-Hotel Golf Resort at Ocean Dunes, whatever we come up with for a name, it will take it to the outer public one level or two levels up.?

Golf courses have worked successfully in conjunction with casinos elsewhere, because of the similar demographics they attract, Rose said.

?Gaming is still going to be a major part of our equation, but instead of 85 percent of our revenues it might be 60,? he said. ?Right now, we?re pretty one-dimensional.?

His financial goal for the golf course is to break even next year, and to turn an operating profit after that, but he notes that the course is ?an amenity? for the casino, and that ?at the end of the day we look at ourselves as one overall picture.?

Currently, Ocean Dunes? weekday walking rate of $48 is less than Sandpines, at $59, and in the ballpark with Emerald Valley and Tokatee at $45; weekday greens fees at Diamond Woods are $34, and $30 at RiverRidge. (Most courses offer specials, via coupons or the Internet, below list price.) Even a post-redesign Ocean Dunes won?t stray much from that pricing point, Rose said.

?We want people to play it, not not to play it,? he said. ?Our goal is to get people out here to enjoy it. I can?t do that if I only have a dozen people on the golf course.?

A couple of upcoming tournaments will bring significantly more players than that ? about 100 golfers are signed up for the Florence Classic, a two-day event at Ocean Dunes and Sandpines on Oct. 13-14. And 120 players will be teeing off in the Coast Open, the annual pro-am event that will come to Ocean Dunes for the first time Oct. 17-18. Rannow can?t wait for the golfers to experience the rejuvenated greens and other changes, and to sense the course?s potential.

?It?s a great turnout,? he said. ?It?s going to breed lots of stories, good and bad.?

And, at least, demonstrate that Ocean Dunes should be back in the discussion.

Chiefs Packers FootballAP

Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel may not be very popular in the stands, but he still has support in the locker room.

Chiefs right tackle Eric Winston took fans to task for cheering when Cassel left the game with a head injury.

The veteran blocker called a group of reporters over, and said the following words, via Arrowhead Pride:

?We are athletes, OK? We are athletes. We are not gladiators. This is not the Roman Coliseum. People pay their hard-earned money when they come in here and I believe they can boo, they can cheer and they can do whatever they want, I believe that. We are lucky to play this game. People, it?s hard to economic times, and they still pay the money to do this.

?But when somebody gets hurt, there are long lasting ramifications to the game we play, long lasting ramifications to the game we play. I?ve already kinda come to the understanding that I won?t live as long because I play this game and that?s OK, that?s a choice I?ve made and a choice all of us have made.

?But when you cheer, when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don?t care who it is, and it just so happened to be Matt Cassel ? it?s sickening. It?s 100 percent sickening. I?ve been in some rough times on some rough teams, I?ve never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than in that moment right there.

?I get emotional about it because these guys, they work their butts off. Matt Cassel hasn?t done anything to you people, hasn?t done anything to you people. Hasn?t done anything to the media writers that kill him, hasn?t done anything wrong to the people that come out here and cheer him. Hey, if he?s not the best quarterback then he?s not the best quarterback and that?s OK. But he?s a person. And he got knocked out in a game and we have 70,000 people cheering that he got knocked out?

?Boo him all you want. Boo me all you want. Throw me under the bus. Tell me I?m doing a bad job. Say I gotta protect him more. Do whatever you want. Say whatever you want. But if you are one of those people, one of those people that were out there cheering or even smiled when he got knocked out, I just want to let you know, and I want everybody to know that I think it?s sickening and disgusting. We are not gladiators and this is not the Roman Coliseum. This is a game.

?I?ll sit here and I?ll answer all your questions for the next 30 minutes if you want to ask them and I?ll take all the responsibility I can take because I deserve it but don?t blame a guy, and don?t cheer for a guy who has done everything in his power to play as good as he can for the fans.

?It?s sickening. And I was embarrassed. I want every single one of you people to put this on your station and in your newspapers because I want every fan to know that. This is a game that?s going to cost us a lot down the road. That?s OK. We picked it, we deserve it and I don?t want your pity. But we have a lot of problems as a society if people think that?s OK.

?I?ll get off my soap box and you guys can ask any football question you want.?

No, Eric, that pretty much covers it.

The Chiefs have played poorly. Frankly, they are a disaster. Cassel leads the parade.

But for too many fans, their passion for the team leads them to forget that the laundry they?re cheering for has a human being inside it.

First contracted SpaceX resupply mission launches with NASA cargo to space station

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? A Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) Falcon 9 rocket carrying its Dragon spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 8:35 p.m. EDT Sunday, beginning NASA's first contracted cargo delivery flight, designated SpaceX CRS-1, to the International Space Station. Under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract, SpaceX will fly at least 12 cargo missions to the space station through 2016. The contract is worth $1.6 billion.

The Dragon spacecraft will be grappled at 7:22 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, by Expedition 33 crew members Sunita Williams of NASA and Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, who will use the station's robotic arm to install the Dragon. The capsule is scheduled to spend 18 days attached to the station. It then will return for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California.

"Just over one year after the retirement of the space shuttle, we have returned space station cargo resupply missions to U.S. soil and are bringing the jobs associated with this work back to America," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "The SpaceX launch tonight marks the official start of commercial resupply missions by American companies operating out of U.S. spaceports like the one right here in Florida."

Dragon is delivering a total of 882 pounds of supplies to the orbiting laboratory, including 260 pounds of crew supplies, 390 pounds of scientific research, 225 pounds of hardware and several pounds of other supplies. Dragon will return a total of 1,673 pounds of supplies, including 163 pounds of crew supplies, 866 pounds of scientific research, 518 pounds of vehicle hardware and other hardware.

Dragon's capability to return cargo from the station is critical for supporting scientific research in the orbiting laboratory's unique microgravity environment, which enables important benefits for humanity and vastly increases understanding of how humans can safely work, live and thrive in space for long periods. The ability to return frozen samples is a first for this flight and will be tremendously beneficial to the station's research community. Not since the space shuttle have NASA and its international partners been able to return considerable amounts of research and samples for analysis.

Materials being launched on Dragon will support experiments in plant cell biology, human biotechnology and various materials technology demonstrations, among others. One experiment, called Micro 6, will examine the effects of microgravity on the opportunistic yeast Candida albicans, which is present on all humans. Another experiment, called Resist Tubule, will evaluate how microgravity affects the growth of cell walls in a plant called Arabidopsis. About 50 percent of the energy expended by terrestrial-bound plants is dedicated to structural support to overcome gravity. Understanding how the genes that control this energy expenditure operate in microgravity could have implications for future genetically modified plants and food supply. Both Micro 6 and Resist Tubule will return with the Dragon at the end of its mission.

SpaceX is one of two companies that built and tested new cargo spacecraft under NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program. SpaceX completed its final demonstration test in May when it flew to the station and performed a series of checkout maneuvers, ultimately being grappled by the station crew and installed on the complex.

Orbital Sciences is the other company participating in COTS. Orbital's Antares launch vehicle is currently on the launch pad at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The launch vehicle and pad will undergo a series of fueling tests that will take about three weeks. After tests are completed, a hot fire test will be conducted. Finally, a test flight of the Antares rocket with a simulated Cygnus spacecraft will be flown in late 2012. A demonstration flight of Cygnus to the station is planned in early 2013.

NASA initiatives like COTS and the agency's Commercial Crew Program are helping develop a robust U.S. commercial space transportation industry with the goal of achieving safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation to and from the space station and low Earth orbit. In addition to cargo flights, NASA's commercial space partners are making progress toward a launch of astronauts from U.S. soil in the next 5 years.

While NASA works with U.S. industry partners to develop and advance these commercial spaceflight capabilities, the agency also is developing the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS), a crew capsule and heavy-lift rocket to provide an entirely new capability for human exploration. Designed to be flexible for launching spacecraft for crew and cargo missions, SLS and Orion will expand human presence beyond low Earth orbit and enable new missions of exploration in the solar system.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Stock ...

With all of the fables and misunderstandings about the market, many of us are too frightened to even get going. When you're an amateur, stock market dealing can look like a disconcerting prospect. There are numerous choices to make on the way, but do not let them scare you. If you're wary and smart with your investments, you haven't any reason to be fearful. If you consider investment as a bet, then you're only predestined to lose money. if you can discriminate between the penny stocks and shares which may remain static from those which are prepared to go on worthwhile jumps , thus using an automatic stock trading program you can possibly make a great amount of cash in a brief period time without doing the logical work yourself.

I checked back in the day after and discovered that that investment had jumped to $.38 a share in the past day. I purchased up about thousand shares thru a web trade account. At that point I continue to see in on that stock continually as it continued to continuously climb. These programs only target penny shares and deliver literally the best stock picks to be found in the market because penny stocks and shares have a name of incredibly jumping in worth in an exceedingly short term due to their less expensive costs leave them open to more trading influence from the outside. Look for a full refund guarantee because this is both an indication of good faith from the publisher and proof that they are pushing a credible programme, but also simultaneously you can test the programme first hand before completely committing to it.

I like to say that penny stocks and shares and stock-trading Bots were made for one another, and it's simply for this very reason like it can discern the good picks from the bad, you can make lots of money in the near term. It?s simple enough to do because you do not have to invest any money, instead you can doublecheck the performances of the picks which it generates for you in the market to find out how well they do in order that you can know regardless of whether you should be making an investment in its next string of picks. Picking the ?gainers? and avoiding the ?losers? is the name of the game.

Warren Buffett knows this idea well, and that made him the second-richest man in the world today. What if you had a method to tell which stocks are making a murdering in the market? Spot the ?gainers? earlier without counting on brokers or deceitful insider information. Now would not that give you the benefit easily? What if androids can do all of that for you? These are what automated stockmarket trading robotic systems do best. * There are new technologies out there now that may significantly raise the probability for successful securities dealing. The best thing about the stockmarket trading software is the undeniable fact that they're programmed to recognise the trends and warn you of which stocks are probably going to be good to make an investment in. They're also comparatively cheap and convenient to use. If you're think about making an investment in a stock dealing software then it might be to your benefit to learn all you are able to about the various type and the arguments of every one before purchasing one.

(AP) ? President Hugo Chavez's crusade to transform Venezuela into a socialist state, which has bitterly divided the nation, was put to the stiffest electoral test of his nearly 14 years in power on Sunday in a closely fought presidential election.

Both camps said turnout was high, with millions of Venezuelans casting ballots. Long lines formed at many polling centers, with queues of hundreds of voters snaking along sidewalks and around blocks in many parts of Caracas.

Polling places were scheduled to begin closing at 6 p.m. local time, but stations remained open wherever voters were still waiting in line at the close. Officials began counting ballots at stations where voting finished, but electoral officials gave no indication of when they might begin releasing partial returns.

Chavez's challenger, Henrique Capriles, united the opposition in a contest between two sides that distrust each other so deeply that some expressed concerns whether a close election result would be respected.

"We will recognize the results, whatever they are," Chavez told reporters after casting his vote in Caracas.

Chavez was greeted at the polling center by American actor Danny Glover and Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize laureate Rigoberta Menchu. He said he was pleased to see a "massive turnout."

Capriles said after voting that the election had been free of violence.

"We've shown the world that we're resolving our differences peacefully through the vote, as it should be," Capriles said. He noted that he had never lost an election and said he was wearing his "lucky" brown suede shoes.

"Today Venezuela is going to win," Capriles said. "We're going to respect what the people say."

The stakes in the country with the world's largest known oil reserves couldn't be higher.

If Chavez wins a new six-year term, he gets a free hand to push for an even bigger state role in the economy, further limit dissent and continue to befriend rivals of the United States.

With a Capriles win, an abrupt foreign policy shift can be expected, including halting preferential oil deals with allies such as Cuba, along with a loosening of state economic controls and an increase in private investment. A tense transition would likely follow until the January inauguration because Chavez's political machine thoroughly controls the wheels of government.

Some Venezuelans were nervous about what might happen if disputes erupt over the election's announced outcome.

"There's a little anxiety on one side and also on the other," said Deyanira Duarte, who voted for Capriles in downtown Caracas. She said she was worried about what could happen if there was a dispute over the results.

Others said they were simply pleased to be out backing their candidate.

Carlos Julio Silva, a bodyguard employed by a private security company, said whatever his faults, Chavez deserved re-election for helping people with programs including free medical care and public housing.

"There is corruption, there's plenty of bureaucracy, but the people have never had a leader who cared about this country," Silva said after voting for Chavez at a school in the Caracas slum of Petare. "That's why the people are going to re-elect Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias."

At many polling places, voters started lining up hours before polls opened at dawn. Some said they waited in line for more than four hours to vote, while in other areas the lines moved more quickly.

Some passed the time outside polling centers with folding chairs, chatting with relatives and friends. Others held umbrellas to block the sun.

Maria Leonis was selling CDs of Chavez's campaign theme music on a sidewalk next to a polling center. "Today I've sold about 100 CDs, just Chavez's song," Leonis said, adding that she supported Chavez because "I want to keep seeing change."

Chavez's critics said the president has inflamed divisions by labeling his opponents "fascists," ''Yankees" and "neo-Nazis," while Chavez's loyalists alleged Capriles would halt generous government programs that assist the poor.

"I'm really tired of all this polarization," said Lissette Garcia, a 39-year-old clothes seller and Capriles supporter who voted in the affluent Caracas district of Las Mercedes. "I want to reconnect with all my friends who are 'Chavistas.'"

Violence flared sporadically during the campaign, including shootings and rock-throwing during rallies and political caravans. Two Capriles supporters were shot to death in the western state of Barinas last weekend.

Troops guarded thousands of voting centers across the country.

Defense Minister Henry Rangel Silva said as he voted that all had been calm and he hoped that would continue. He said if any groups try to "disturb order, they should know there is an armed force prepared and equipped and trained ... to put down any attempt at disturbances."

He didn't identify the groups to which he was referring.

Chavez's opponents mounted a noisy protest in Caracas and other major cities Saturday night, beating pots and pans from the windows of their homes to show displeasure with the president ? and also their hopes for change. Drivers on downtown streets honked horns, joining the din.

The 40-year-old Capriles, a wiry former governor affectionately called "Skinny" by supporters, infused the opposition with new optimism, and opinion polls pointed to him giving Chavez his closest election.

Some recent polls gave Chavez a lead of about 10 percentage points, while others put the two candidates about even.

Chavez spoke little during the campaign about his fight with cancer, which since June 2011 has included surgery to remove tumors from his pelvic region as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He has said his most recent tests showed no sign of illness.

"Chavez is going to fight until his last breath. He doesn't know how to do anything else," said Antonio Padron, a bank employee backing the president. Padron expressed optimism that the 58-year-old Chavez would win but predicted a close finish: "It's a tough fight. The opposition has never been this strong."

Chavez won the last presidential vote in 2006 with 63 percent of the vote.

A former army paratroop commander first elected in 1999, Chavez has presided over an oil boom and has spent billions of dollars on social programs ranging from cash benefits for single mothers to free education.

But he has suffered declining support due to one of the world's highest murder rates, 18 percent inflation, a deteriorating electrical grid and a bloated government accused of endemic corruption and mismanagement.

While his support has slipped at home, Chavez has also seen his international influence ebb since he emerged in the mid-2000s as leader of a like-minded club of newly elected Latin American leftist presidents.

Chavez accumulated near-absolute power over the past decade thanks to his control of the National Assembly, pliant institutions such as the Central Bank and friendly judges.

Capriles said Chavez has stirred up hatred, hobbled the economy by expropriating private businesses and squandered oil wealth. He criticized Chavez's preferential deals supplying oil to allies, including one that lets Cuba pay with the services of Cuban doctors.

At one voting center in western Zulia state, in the municipality of Santa Rita, voters said some people had actually formed two separate lines ? one with Chavez supporters and the other with Capriles supporters. Elsa Gutierrez, a housewife and Capriles supporter, said it was wrong to have two lines and feared it could lead to conflicts.

"This situation can't be permitted," Gutierrez said, adding that she voted for Capriles "because I want this division in my country to end."

Political analyst Ricardo Sucre said he expected the election to show "two halves, more or less even." Regardless of the result, he said, Venezuelans are likely to remain deeply divided by politics for years to come.

Falcons go 5-0, knock RG3 out in win over Redskins

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) ? After the Atlanta Falcons knocked Robert Griffin III out of the game, Matt Ryan kept throwing and throwing and throwing until he finally scraped up enough points to give his team its first 5-0 start in franchise history.

Michael Turner ran 13 yards for the go-ahead score with 2:46 to play, and Ryan completed 34 of 52 passes for 345 yards Sunday as Atlanta beat Washington 24-17, handing the Redskins their eighth consecutive home loss and leaving their Heisman Trophy winner woozy.

Tony Gonzalez caught 13 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown on a day when the Falcons' usually powerful offense was just a bit out of sync, producing lots of numbers without much payoff against one of the worst secondaries in the NFL.

Julio Jones had 10 receptions for 94 yards, including an 18-yard catch with both feet barely inbounds that gave Atlanta the lead early in the fourth quarter.

Griffin was injured early in the second half while trying to scramble for the end zone on third-and-goal from the 3. As he went down, he took a solid hit to the helmet from the upper body of linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. Clearly rattled, the No. 2 overall draft pick had his head examined on the sideline before being taken to the locker room.

Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin suffered a "mild concussion." Team spokesman Tony Wyllie said the quarterback was examined by an independent neurologist before being sent home from the stadium and will be evaluated again Monday.

Griffin's susceptibility to injury was a concern when he was hammered hard while carrying the ball frequently in the option in the Redskins' first three games, but Shanahan went with a more conventional approach in the last two games. Griffin did not have a designed run on Sunday, yet he nevertheless had to leave a game for the first time in his young career.

Griffin was 10 for 15 for 91 yards when he was hurt. The play after his injury, Billy Cundiff converted a 23-yard field goal that gave the Redskins (2-3) a 10-7 lead.

Kirk Cousins, a fourth-round pick from Michigan State making his NFL debut, entered in place of Griffin and went three-and-out in his first possession. The Falcons then took advantage of Sav Rocca's shanked punt to drive 47 yards for a touchdown on Jones' catch.

But Cousins gave the Redskins the lead again about a minute later, when Santana Moss ran deep down the middle without a defender anywhere near him. The 77-yard pass made the score 17-14 early in the fourth quarter.

Ryan then cobbled two scoring drives that gave the Falcons the win. Matt Bryant's 53-yard field goal with 7:42 remaining tied the score, and a 29-yard pass to Jones was the key play in a 69-yard drive that led to Turner's decisive touchdown.

Cousins had two more chances to rally the Redskins, but he was intercepted twice in the final two minutes. He finished 5 for 9 for 111 yards.

Alfred Morris ran for 115 yards on 18 carries for Washington.

Considerations For A Mobile Web Design Strategy
The use of the internet has increased and more and more people are accessing the internet. However, it is not
always that people use computers to access the internet. They might be travelling or not be near a computer
and need to use the internet. This is when mobile devices come in handy. Many businesses have websites and
as they design them, they must ensure that their websites are accessible on mobile devices if they want more
clients. Websites differ from one client to another but strategies need to be set on how the site will function
on both the computer and the mobile devices. We shall highlight some of the key considerations that one
needs to make when planning to design a mobile web.
Purpose For The Mobile Web
The purpose for designing the website varies. It could be an existing website that is being developed in order
to be accessible from a mobile device; it could also be a completely new website being designed to
accommodate both computer and mobile devices or an improvement of an existing mobile site to include
more features. Each of these has different requirements and a good web Massachusetts web design expert
will be able to address each of them accordingly.
Business Objectives
A Massachusetts web design expert should take time to familiarize themselves with the objectives of the
business that they are designing the website for. Given the objectives, they will be able to know what to put
on the website, that is what information to include and what photos to put up.
Past Data
This mostly applies if a website previously existed. Find out from which browser it was accessible or how
much traffic did it attract. Obviously, this new design will work to improve the previous one while taking into
consideration the problems that it faced.
Responsive Design Of The Web
This means that instead of going through the trouble of building a new site each time a new mobile device
comes up, you can create your site such that the experiences on the computer and those on the desktop are
simultaneous. Using the latest technology, you can create your site such that it is accessible from any device.
Simplicity
The mobile design should ultimately be more simplified than the computer one. This can be achieved by
reducing the size of the files so that the pages load at a faster rate. Also ensure that the users have an easy
time accessing the pages on the site. This does not however mean that your site will become boring, you will
still be able to display all the fun things that you would like but toning each of them down.
Interaction
It is always good to include a provision for feedback in your website. This enables you to interact with your
visitors and be able to respond to their needs in a more efficient way. Also you can include the state of loading
for pages that may take longer to load.
With these considerations, your Massachusetts web design specialist will be able to come up with a good
design that will meet your needs and those of your client.

Bus overturns on New Jersey exit ramp; 23 hurt

WAYNE, N.J. (AP) ? A tour bus from Canada carrying about 60 people bound for New York City overturned on a highway exit ramp in northern New Jersey early Saturday, slid down an embankment and landed on its side, injuring 23 people on board, authorities said.

The driver, who suffered a gash in his arm, told state police that he was cut off by another vehicle, though it was not immediately clear whether that caused the crash around 7:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 in Wayne.

Some windows burst during the crash and their frames pinned three people, but they were quickly freed and taken to hospitals with the other injured. The bus had been chartered by a church group.

Eight of the injured passengers were admitted in critical condition, hospital spokeswoman Liz Asani said. Further details on their injuries were not disclosed. The rest of the injured, including two young children, were being treated for minor injuries at two other hospitals.

State police have said none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

"It was terrifying," Norma Cumberbatch, 66, of Toronto, told The Star-Ledger of Newark. Cumberbatch, who was traveling with her 68-year-old sister, Marjorie, said she struggled to free her legs from fallen luggage and other debris before trying to find her sister.

"I just took my leg out and then said, 'Where's my sister? I want my sister.'"

Marjorie Cumberbatch said she heard "thump, thump, thump. Then I looked up and I saw people over me screaming and crying."

Passengers who were unhurt were put on another bus and continued their journey, authorities said.

The coach bus was from Toronto-based AVM Max 2000 Charter Services Inc., state police said. The phone for AVM Max rang unanswered Saturday afternoon, and the company did not respond to an email Saturday.

The crash was the latest of several coach bus accidents over the past few years on American highways. Last year, a bus carrying gamblers from a trip to a Connecticut casino struck a guardrail as it entered New York City, then toppled over and hit a signpost that sliced off the top of the bus. Thirteen people were killed. A manslaughter trial for the driver began last month.

Saturday's accident backed up traffic in the area for hours while law enforcement officials and emergency services vehicles attended to the scene. Several highways connect there, and the area is known locally as the "spaghetti bowl," according to The Record.

1 dead, 10 arrested in anti-terror sweep in France

PARIS (AP) ? Police carried out raids across France on Saturday after DNA on a grenade that exploded last month at a kosher grocery store led them to a suspected jihadist cell of young Frenchmen recently converted to Islam.

The man whose DNA was identified, named by police as Jeremy Sydney, was killed by police after he opened fire on them, slightly wounding three officers in the eastern city of Strasbourg. Officials said he had been under surveillance since last spring ? around the time a French Islamic went on a shooting rampage against a Jewish school and French soldiers, killing seven people.

Ten other suspects, aged between 19 and 25, were arrested across the country on Saturday. One man was carrying a loaded gun, and police found weapons, cash and a list of Paris-area Israeli associations during the raids.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said all the arrested suspects were French and recent converts to Islam.

Four of the men involved in the raid had written wills.

"You can imagine what their other plans could have been," Eric Voulleminot, a counterterrorism official, said at a news conference with Molins.

The prosecutor described 33-year-old Sydney, sentenced in 2008 to two years in prison for drug trafficking, as a "delinquent who converted to radical Islam." He said others in the cell indicated they wanted to return to "the land of jihad."

A statement from President Francois Hollande praised the police for the raids and said the state would continue to "protect the French against all terrorist threats."

Last month's firebombing of the grocery, in a Jewish neighborhood outside Paris, happened on Sept. 19, the same day a French satirical paper published crude caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. Anti-Western protests were also growing at the time against an anti-Islam film. One person was slightly injured, but the attack came after a summer of what residents described as growing anti-Semitic threats.

France, which has the largest Muslim population in Europe, is trying to contain the spread of a radical Islam hostile to Western influences.

The prosecutor was careful not to draw direct links between Saturday's arrests and Mohamed Merah, a young Frenchman of Algerian descent who died in a shootout with police in March after the killings in the south of France. That attack terrorized the French Jewish community, which has since ramped up security in many parts of the country.

Merah had studied at an Islamist paramilitary camp in Pakistan and claimed ties to al-Qaida. Molins said officials did not believe the men arrested Saturday had trained abroad, but cautioned that the investigation was ongoing.

Ryan Chalmers Training to Push Across America | Men's Health News

Ryan Chalmers will attempt to "Push Across America" next April.

Ryan Chalmers is a man among boys. The 23-year-old from Churchville, NY is training for a feat that few others would pretend to tackle, let alone actually want to: a 71-day journey next April called ?Push Across America.? He?ll navigate his wheelchair from Los Angeles to New York?something that?s never been done before.

Chalmers has Spina Bifida, a developmental condition in which your spinal canal and backbone don?t close before birth. Although he can walk a bit with the help of crutches, it keeps him in a wheelchair for the much of the time. But you can?t say he hasn?t made the best of it: He began pushing 3 miles a day when he was 8 years old, and clocked his first marathon at about 2 hours and 10 minutes. He was 14.

Fast forward to today. He?s just competed in the Paralympics in London, he?s training for the push of his life backed by Stay-Focused, a SCUBA diving nonprofit for disabled children, and?oh yeah?he?s competing in the Chicago Marathon this weekend. (Running a marathon yourself? Check out these 30 Tips from 30 Marathoners.)

So we met up with Chalmers to ask him why the hell he agreed to all of this, and of course, to find out what keeps him moving forward at such a pace.

Men?s Health: We?re intrigued. Why push across America?

Ryan Chalmers: I always wanted to make a difference [in Stay-Focused, where he mentors kids with disabilities as they learn to SCUBA dive in the Cayman Islands]. I love to push and I love to wheelchair-race?I was able to mend those two together.

MH: But this is 3,500 miles. Mentally, how do you prepare for this one?

RC: It?s a much different mindset?I?m not going for pique potential. I?m working on my base and trying to get my endurance up as much as I possibly can. The entire process is going to be 5- or 6-hour days in my racing chair. The longest push that I?ve ever done has been 34 miles?I?ll be doing 60 a day. (Chalmers says his training routine will compare to the lead up to the Paralympics: over 6 or 7 days a week, mixing mid-distance races, sprints, and longer tracks with a heavy lifting schedule and a more monitored diet.)

MH: And what about your competition?how do you size the people you?ll be up against?

RC: People who are smaller are going to be able to push up hills faster, so I?ll be able to go down hills faster. I know people who can?t turn like I can because of their mobility. If you can?t feel from your chest down, it?s going to be a lot harder for you to turn. I have to know that and capitalize on that. That?s when I start to sprint around the turns.

MH: Any guy would be thrilled to complete even the tiniest fraction of what you?ve done, so we have to ask: You?re in great shape, but how confident are you that you?ll make it the whole way next April?

RC: Everybody asks me: ?Do you think you can make it across the U.S. in a wheelchair? It?s never been done before.? And, really, the only answer is, ?I will make it. There?s not another option for me. My back is against the wall. I agreed to it and it?s either I make it or I die.?

MH: You?ve probably had to deal with a lot of people feeling bad for you throughout your life because of your disability?how do you handle that?

RC: You accept it. That?s okay; it?s their opinion. I?ve traveled all over the world where people look at you, and yeah, they feel bad. They?ll say, ?Oh, and he does a sport, too,? instead of, ?Wow, look at this athlete. He puts his heart and soul into it six days a week, seven days a week.? If you look at athletes as athletes first, you can start to learn. Everyone has an interesting story, and that?s kind of pushed to the wayside sometimes. I?m happy with my disability; I always will be. People always ask me about the ?magic pill???If you could take it, would you? You would be healed??and my answer is always no. My disability has gotten me to so many places. I?m happy where my life is.

MH: So you?d rather be . . .

RC: An athlete first.

Tune in to watch Chalmers compete in the Chicago Marathon this weekend.

Testing can be useful for students and teachers

ScienceDaily (Oct. 5, 2012) ? Pop quiz! Tests are good for: (a) Assessing what you've learned; (b) Learning new information; (c) a & b; (d) None of the above.

The correct answer?

According to research from psychological science, it's both (a) and (b) -- while testing can be useful as an assessment tool, the actual process of taking a test can also help us to learn and retain new information over the long term and apply it across different contexts.

New research published in journals of the Association for Psychological Science explores the nuanced interactions between testing, memory, and learning and suggests possible applications for testing in educational settings.

Appropriate Multiple-Choice Tests Can Foster Test-Induced Learning

One of the criticisms of multiple-choice tests is that they expose test takers to the correct answer among the available options. This means that you only have to recognize the correct answer, you don't have to rely on retrieval processes that are known to enhance later recall. Psychological scientist Jeri Little and her colleagues investigated whether multiple-choice tests could actually be designed to call upon these retrieval processes. If the alternative answers are all plausible enough, they hypothesized, test takers would have to retrieve information about why correct alternatives are correct and also about why incorrect alternatives are incorrect in order to be able to distinguish between the two. In two experiments, the researchers found that properly constructed multiple-choice tests can, in fact, trigger productive retrieval processes. They also found that multiple-choice tests had one potentially important advantage over tests in which only the question is presented. Both kinds of tests helped test takers remember the information they been tested on, but only the multiple-choice tests helped them recall information related to incorrect alternatives. These findings suggest that multiple-choice tests can be constructed in ways that exercise the very retrieval processes they have been accused of bypassing.

Jeri L. Little of Washington University in St. Louis was one of the authors. Published online October 3, 2012 in Psychological Science.

Testing Enhances the Transfer of Learning

Many studies have shown that having to retrieve information during a test helps you remember that information later on. But most research on this "testing effect" has measured the ability to recall information in the form of a final test that's similar to the initial test. Much less is known about the whether testing might also promote the application -- or transfer -- of learning. In this article, psychological scientist Shana Carpenter reviews recent studies that have begun to address this issue, especially as it relates to the benefits of testing on our ability to transfer information across multiple contexts, test formats, and knowledge domains. The few studies on this topic have, so far, reported robust benefits of testing on the transfer of learning. Carpenter highlights the need for research that explores the potential of tests to promote not just the direct retention of information, but also the application of knowledge to new situations.

Shana K. Carpenter of Iowa State University was one of the authors. Published in the October 2012 issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science.

Testing Can Strengthen Short-Term Memory for Cross-Language Information

Researchers know that repeated testing leads to better long-term memory for information than does repeated study, but they're unsure of why this is the case. Psychological scientist Peter Verkoeijen and his colleagues hypothesized that studying may strengthen the aspects of a memory trace that pertain to the way words look and sound, while testing may strengthen the aspects of a memory trace that have to do with the meaning of words. The researchers had Dutch-English bilingual participants learn several lists of words in Dutch. In some instances they were tested after an initial study period (test condition), and in others they were told to study the list again (restudy condition). Participants' memory for the words was then tested in Dutch or English. The main finding shows that participants in the test condition were better at recognizing the words they had been told to learn when they took the final test in English (across-language) but not when they took the final test in Dutch (within-language). These results suggests that using a test as a method of learning -- strengthening the meaning of words -- was useful for the participants when they weren't able to rely on the visual or phonological familiarity of words because the words were presented in different languages. The results lend support to the researchers' hypothesis that restudying and testing strengthen memory in different ways.

Peter Verkoeijen of Erasmus University Rotterdam was among the authors. Published in the June 2012 issue of Psychological Science.

Active Retrieval Promotes Meaningful Learning

When researchers think about the retrieval of information from memory, they often focus on retrieval as a way to figure out what people have already learned. But psychological scientist Jeffrey Karpicke argues that retrieval processes play a central role in the active process of learning as it happens. Karpicke outlines the retrieval-based learning perspective and discusses the role of retrieval in learning, the means by which it can enhance learning over the long-term, and the ways in which it can help to promote meaningful learning.

Jeffrey D. Karpicke of Purdue University published the article in the June 2012 issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science.
