PFT: Steelers LB Spence suffers ugly knee injury

nfl_a_raymond_james_b1_576AP

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to struggle to sell tickets, and it?s gotten so bad that it?s time to address the question of whether the market still merits having an NFL franchise.

With their regular-season home opener only nine days away, the Buccaneers remain 9,000 short of the goal for lifting the local blackout.

The gap, reported by Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, must be closed within 72 hours of kickoff, or the game won?t be televised in the team?s home market.

The failure to sell enough tickets at the stadium comes despite a string of efforts to sell all non-premium seats, from taking full advantage of the new league rule that allows teams to cut their ?manifest? to 85 percent, to uncharacteristically spending million on free agents like Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks, and Eric Wright, to hiring a new coach, to cutting the prices on parking and concessions for the home opener, to honoring Ronde Barber.

By the way, it?s the first freaking game of the year.? And Cam Newton is coming to town.? Division rival.? The team that once claimed Chris Simms? spleen.

It was supposed to be a slam dunk for Week One.? And still the team is 9,000 tickets short.

Look, we like Tampa.? The city did a great job hosting the Super Bowl.? But regardless of the reason ? local economy, apathy, whatever ? if fans continue to fail to show up for the games, at some point the team needs to be moved to a place where the fans have the money, the time, and the inclination to attend games.

The Glazers get blamed for plenty of things.? They bear no blame here.? The Glazers have tried to improve the team and to make it more attractive to attend games.? Eventually, the people need to respond.

There?s no indication that the Glazers are looking to move the team.? Given the manner in which the community continues to respond to the franchise, they?d be crazy if they weren?t exploring their options.

Genesys research finds big business still uneasy with Customer ...

Aug 30, 2012 ? Research conducted by Genesys, an expert in customer experience solutions, found that many consumer-facing Fortune 500 companies shy away from listing social media as a means for customers to contact them. More than half (55 percent) of consumer-facing Fortune 500 businesses do not provide their Twitter handles on the ?Contact Us? page of their websites. Additionally, despite the fact that Facebook has 900 million users across the world; half of these businesses (51 percent) do not provide a link to their Facebook profile on the ?Contact Us? page.

The research also uncovered that corporations suffer from e-mail aversion, with nine out of ten failing to list an e-mail address on their contact page. Instead, 83 percent of companies include a contact form, often off-putting to consumers and seen as a ?black-hole.?

  • More than half of consumer-facing Fortune 500 Corporations suffer from social shyness with 55 percent of consumer facing corporations failing to list a Twitter handle on their ?Contact Us? page, and 51 percent failing to list a Facebook page.
  • 27 percent of consumer-facing Fortune 500 corporations do not list social media channels on their website homepage.
  • 89 percent of those same companies do not list an e-mail address on their site.
  • 13 percent of companies do not list a phone number on their ?Contact Us? page.

The findings are based on Genesys analysis of consumer-facing Fortune 500 companies? websites. Consumer-facing company websites were defined as those which a consumer would visit to obtain answers or assistance regarding a product or service.

?These findings are an indication that social media is still a very new phenomenon,? explained Tom Eggemeier, head of Global Sales at Genesys. ?Many large consumer-facing companies are still struggling and not confident in their ability to deal with customer queries and complaints via social media. Consumer-facing companies need to resolve this disconnect by developing a customer service strategy that understands and integrates social media channels across every customer touch point.?

> Currency Trading > Trading Forex To Advance Your Financial Position

Everyday, currencies are traded in an international foreign exchange market, otherwise known as the forex market, with the main marketplaces (otherwise known as bourses) existing in the world?s financial centes New York, London, Tokyo, Frankfurt and Zurich. Historically, the only way to participate was from the trading floor of one of these bourses, but today, people can trade forex from anywhere through a secure internet connection and a PC.

Today?s traders operate in a global network, taking positions in the market and making investment decisions based on either relative value between two currencies, or a particular currency?s actual price. Currency value fluctuations are constantly renegotiated through trading activity, and this activity, and the corresponding currency values are also indicators of the levels of currency supply.

An example of market behaviour greater demand for the Euro might indicate a weakening supply. Low supply and increased demand will drive the price of the Euro up against other currencies like the dollar, until the price better reflects what traders are prepared to pay when short supply exists. Another way to look at this situation is this higher demand means it will cost more
dollars to buy the Euro, which equates to a weakening of the dollar in comparison. Analysis of situations such as in this example forms the basis for a trader?s investment decisions, and they will purchase or sell currency accordingly.

This should be remembered, as while many see the foreign exchange market as the vehicle for converting their home currency while travelling abroad, many others choose to use the market to advance their financial position and secure their future.

Springboks gamble with squad for Australasia

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer gambled Wednesday by choosing uncapped Johan Goosen and Duane Vermeulen in his Rugby Championship squad for away Tests against Australia and New Zealand next month.

Fly-half Goosen and No 8 Vermeulen have just returned to Currie Cup action after long injury lay-offs and respective coaches Naka Drotske of Cheetahs and Allister Coetzee of Stormers believe they are not ready for Test action.

However, Meyer is desperate to silence critics after the public and media turned on him following a undeserved 16-16 draw away to newcomers Argentina last weekend in the southern hemisphere championship.

The coach defended his selections in a statement: "While Duane and Johan are medically fit, their coaches felt it necessary that they get more game time in the Currie Cup this weekend.

"But as we do not have a lot of time to prepare and need as much time with them as possible to get them used to our structures and game plans, the decision was taken to select them for the tour.

"I regard both of them as world-class players. If it was not for injuries, Duane would have been a Springbok long ago. I also believe Johan has a long career ahead of him at Test level."

Vermeulen has been kept out of the Springobk team by now injured Pierre Spies while 20-year-old Goosen is a phenomenal place kicker who finished sixth among the leading Super 15 scorers despite missing half the season.

Areas of major concern in the team have been fly-half, where Morne Steyn has lost some of his place-kicking magic and lacks flair, and a back row that came off second best to Los Pumas in the breakdown battle.

The Springboks face Australia, reeling from two defeats in as many weekends by New Zealand, on September 8 in Perth and the rampant All Blacks in Dunedin a week later.

South Africa have poor away records against the Wallabies and the All Blacks and Meyer has added four players and axed two from the squad that travelled to Argentina.

Apart from the introduction of Goosen and Vermeulen, centre Juan de Jongh and flank Francois Louw from English club Bath are recalled while wing-cum-centre JJ Engelbrecht and loose forward Keegan Daniel drop out.

De Jongh was part of the squad for the 27-6 home Test victory over Argentina and openside flank Louw comes back after being ignored since the Springobks lost to Australia in a 2011 World Cup quarter-final.

Chronic stress linked to high risk of stroke

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Chronic stress, prompted by major life stressors and type A personality traits, is linked to a high risk of stroke, finds research published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Chronic stress, manifested as physical and/or mental symptoms in response to stressors lasting longer than 6 months has been linked to a heightened risk of heart disease. But its impact on the risk of stroke has not been clear.

The research team base their findings on150 adults, with an average age of 54, who had been admitted to one stroke unit, and 300 randomly selected healthy people of a similar age who lived in the same neighbourhood.

Levels of chronic stress were assessed using the combined quantitative scores of four validated scales, looking at major life events; symptoms, such as anxiety and depression; general wellbeing; and behaviour patterns indicative of type A personality (ERCTA scale).

Type A behaviours include hostility, aggression, impatience and a quick temper. A score of 24 or higher on the ERCTA scale is considered to be indicative of a type A personality.

Participants were also assessed for known biological risk factors for stroke, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, any history of heart rhythm abnormalities, and daytime sleepiness.

And they were quizzed on their lifestyle, including their caffeine, alcohol and energy drink intake, as well as whether they smoked, had a partner, and a job.

The results showed that several factors were independently associated with a heightened risk of stroke.

Compared with the healthy comparison group, the risk of a stroke was almost four times higher among those who had experienced a major life event in the previous year.

A high score on the ERCTA scale more than doubled stroke risk, as did a current or previous history of smoking, and intake of two or more energy drinks a day.

And those with heart rhythm disturbances were more than three times as likely to have a stroke while those with a high daytime sleepiness score almost tripled their risk. And being a man boosted the risk nine-fold.

But when all the factors were assessed together, the risk of a stroke was associated with a stressful life and type A behaviours. And this held true, irrespective of other risk factors, including gender and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Get Your Business Book Published! | Online Success Articles

?

By Chia-Li Chien

I want to do the best I can and get the best results. Successful people like Martha Stewart always want any given project or business to be ?a good thing.? I am following that motto. When I decide on a book project, from the beginning, I intend on it being ?a good thing.? Starting your book project with 1) defining the purpose of the book, 2) structuring your book as a book proposal and 3) getting into the routine of book writing will give you get a head start with a workable schedule to enable you to successfully complete your goal.

There were 11,327 new book titles and editions published per day on average in 2010 according to Bowker; the official ISBN Agency for Australia, United States and U.S. territories. Through advanced technology, it is much easier to publish books today. Yet many aspiring authors feel overwhelmed by writing or publishing their first books.

A book is a product and any new product goes through many phases. I will take you through three phases or parts. Part One: Product Design, Part Two: Manufacturing and Part Three: Go-To-Market. In this article, I will focus on Part One: Product Design.

How will you approach your book?

In general, non-fiction books in the business category can be a great marketing and branding tool. It showcases the credentials of the author and helps the author stand out among peers. That being said, there are two types of approaches to writing a business book?1) research-based conclusion and 2) practitioner-based processes.

Approach One ? Research-based conclusion

Books such as Good To Great by Jim Collins or The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell or Make Money Not Excuses by Jean Chatzky are a few examples of this type of approach. Jim Collins is a researcher and business consultant. Malcolm Gladwell and Jean Chatzky are journalists. They all use historical data, stories, etc. to drive and prove their message. Great by Choice, Jim Collins? most recent book demonstrates its own research methods in addition to historical data.

Approach Two ? Practitioner-based processes

Before you decide to boost your credentials via the powerful marketing tool publishing can be, define the approach you will take in your book for a good start toward a successful completion.

My award-winning book Show Me The Money is written in the practitioner-based processes style. However, my upcoming book, Work Toward Reward, is a combination of my own two-year-long research and practitioner-based processes.

Books such as The One Minute Sales Person by Spencer Johnson or The Leadership Pill by Ken Blanchard or Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh are examples of a few practitioner-based processes books. Both Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson are known for their one-story settings with simple illustrations. They are practitioners in their industry and share personal and business experiences and processes with their readers. Tony Hsieh, the successful entrepreneur who sold Zappos.com to Amazon.com for nearly $1 Billion in late 2009 also writes within that same formula. In all these examples, the authors share their own experience and advice.

Take on your book as a project

As I mentioned earlier, a book is a product and any new product development has a definite start and finish timeframe. Therefore, treat it like a project. For example, in a start-up it?s called a business plan, or in the corporate world it?s called a project plan. In the book publishing industry it?s called a book proposal.

Traditionally, an author submits a book proposal to a publisher to validate his or her product idea and intended market size. Publishers or literary agents use the book proposal as a feasibility study to test for a market for the book. (Remember, from a publishers? point of view, books are a product to make a profit on so they can continue to stay in business.)

Here are a few areas of the book proposal that I believe are of utmost importance for traditional publishers as well as self-publishers:

? What is your qualification as an author to write this book? I was pretty unknown in the publishing industry and had to write two and a half pages to justify my credentials for my first book Show Me The Money. However, in my second book, Work Toward Reward, I only had a one-paragraph sample?just like any other better-known authors. I now have several awards and recognitions from the industry based on my column and first book, which give me the credentials I need for the publishing industry.

? Who are the books? intended readers? Or in other words, what is the target market? In my first book, my target was small business owners with annual revenue of more than $1 million. Specifically, the voice and stories were written and geared toward women business owners. (That market size is about 6% of all privately-held businesses, but women owners are less than 3%.) Your defined market has to be very specific so that you are speaking directly to that market.

? What will my two sample chapters look like? Two sample chapters will give you and the publisher a good idea of your writing skills as well as the main points of the book that will benefit your readers.

? Are there existing competitive titles? Or in other words, what books are your competitors? Common sense tells us that there is mostly likely a book out there already about the subject that you want to write about. Find out what these books are and dig into any related books in order to get an overall view of the competition. The good news is you can use competing books as part of your reference section if you choose to quote or use points from their findings. The more reference books you have in your book the better its chances of meeting traditional publishing standards. It shows how much due diligence you?ve done to support your materials.

? What is the content overview? In other words, outline your table of contents. This helps you create a framework or structure of how you will guide your readers through your content. I originally proposed to have nineteen chapters in my first book, Show Me The Money. The published book actually has twenty-one chapters along with five appendixes. However in my second book, Work Toward Reward, I planned for ten chapters, but the final product has five chapters and six appendixes.

? When will the book be completed? Do you have a project timeline? In my original book proposal for Show Me The Money, the timeline began in September of 2009 with a proposed completion date of June 2010. By March 2010 my book was published and released. Having a timeline for writing your book gives you a sense of urgency to complete it.

? How are you going to market or promoting your book? I will talk more about this in Phase 3: Go-To-Market, so stay tuned

Get started with a writing schedule.

Blogging is a great way to get yourself into the routine of writing on a schedule. I still write an average of two to three articles a month for my blog.

Before I wrote my first book, I had a contract with Entrepreneurs Magazine to write an ?exit planning? column for Women Entrepreneurs online. By contract agreement, I had to deliver one article per month to the editor of the magazine. I used this type of structure for my book as well. I ended up writing two to three articles a month for the magazine and I leveraged that content into my book. That enabled me to complete my book in three months as opposed to the forty-week schedule in my book proposal.

Give yourself something you can commit to such as one article or chapter per week, every other week or a month. Get into the routine?yes routine?is the keyword here. This can keep your creative juices flowing and help you get into the writing zone.

This article series resulted from many members of my Toastmaster Advanced club expressing interest in publishing their books, but not knowing where to start. Stay tuned for the next article in the series: Part Two: Manufacturing. I will talk more in that article about the difference between traditional publishers and self-publishers.

Gymnast Sarah Finnegan Is US Olympic Alternate | 9th Arkansas

What started out as a recreational sports activity has turned into Olympic dreams for gymnast Sarah Finnegan.

The 15-year-old from Town and Country will be one of three alternates on the US Olympic womens gymnastics team at the upcoming London Games.

If any of the five gymnasts on the team gets hurt, then its possible Finnegan could move center stage. Shes currently training with the Olympic team in Houston, Texas, as if shell get the chance to compete. The team took off for London on July 19, and the opening ceremonies begin on July 27.

Finnegans story includes a six-year stint of training at the St. Louis Gymnastics Centre (SLGC) in Webster Groves, where her progression in the sport really began. She started participating in gymnastics at age three in Los Angeles, where she was born. A year later, her family moved to St. Louis. She spent a year at another gymnastics facility before her parents, Don and Linabelle Finnegan, moved Sarah and her three sisters to SLGC because it was closer to home.

In 2008, the Finnegan family realized Sarah had the talent and desire to compete at the highest level, but SLGC couldnt offer her the chance to become an Olympian. SLGCs goal is to produce college scholarships, not Olympic champions.

The Finnegans found an opportunity for Sarah to train for the Olympics at Great American Gymnastics Express in Blue Springs, Mo., which is known for producing Olympic competitors from coaches Al Fong and Armine Barutyan-Fong.

So, Sarah, her mother and three sisters, Hannah, 17, Jennah, 11, and Aleah, 9, also competitive gymnasts, moved across the state. Don, vice president of corporate operations for Enterprise Holdings, remained in St. Louis. He travels to Kansas City on the weekends and talks with his family on Apples Facetime. Don and the rest of the family will leave for London on July 26.

Don, a former All-American wrestler at Iowa State University in 1979 who was apart of the Cyclones 1977 NCAA champion squad, said his family is grateful for the SLGC coaches and opportunities his daughters had at the Webster Groves facility. Sarahs three sisters also competed and trained at the center.

The St. Louis Gymnastics Centre is a very good program, Don said. They provide a very competitive program. The coaches are very knowledgeable. Webster Groves is a great community. Sarah just had higher aspirations.

Interest in gymnastics has grown at the facility, said Amy King, Sarahs former coach at SLGC. Each class has a waiting list. King said SLGC trains more than 1,000 boys and girls, and shes currently training several girls who show signs of being able to compete at the highest level. King said Sarah had Olympic potential when she was her coach.

Im very excited for her, King said. Shes a soft-spoken, sweet girl. Shes very humble. Im very proud to have coached her. She always had natural ability. She just executed that ability. She just wanted more. Id love to say we taught her all that stuff. It turned out to be a very good move (to the Blue Springs center).

When Sarah moved on, she was competing at level eight. In 2010 and 2011, she competed in the junior division. By the start of 2012, Sarah was competing at the senior international level, which enabled her to compete for a spot on the Olympic team. She also was age-eligible for the Olympics by 50 days. In her senior international debut at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy, in March, she placed third overall. At the recent Olympic Trials in San Jose, Calif., she finished sixth overall. She also placed sixth at the Visa Championships in St. Louis in June.

Sarahs best events are on the balance beam and floor exercises. She doesnt let the huge crowds and noise distract her from performing ? just like her father when he competed at Iowa State. She shows the flexibility and agility ? just like her father did in wrestling.

She is very disciplined, very determined and very competitive, Don said. Shes so mentally tough. Shes just focused on what she has to do. Shes worked very hard for this. I just think she has God-given talent. Shes the youngest on the team and has the least amount of experience. Yet, she is still able to hang with the best.

King said she would like to see Sarah compete in London or maybe in the 2016 Games in Rio De Janeiro.

It brings chills and tears every time I watch her perform, she said. I look forward to seeing her the next four years.

How Much Time Do Residents Spend On Meals? - Retirement Homes

Have you ever noticed how often residents in your senior living community comment about the food and dining room? How many times do they check the menu or ask a staff member, ?What?s for dinner?? Does it sometimes feel like mealtimes are the only thing on everyone?s mind?

Consider the amount of time residents spend preoccupied with dining and you?ll begin to see how important the dining experience is to overall resident satisfaction and community building.

Up to 60% of a resident?s day is focused on mealtimes.
Think about it. They are either anticipating a meal, preparing for a meal, going to a meal, eating a meal, visiting with friends in the hall after a meal, or returning from a meal.?Breakfast, lunch and dinner make up the framework the rest of their day is built around.

Mealtime means much more than food to our residents.
Too often we fail to appreciate that, to our residents, the social aspects of dining are as important as what is on the plate.

Imagine what life is like for a resident in a senior care community. It can be a solitary existence, especially if they?ve lost a spouse and live alone. It?s no wonder meals become the highlight of the day. It?s true; in the dining room residents will be able to satisfy their physical hunger. But mealtime also means getting out of their rooms, socializing with friends, and catching up on the neighborhood news.

In the dining room, residents bond as a family, even though they come from different backgrounds.
You and your staff are an important part of that family bonding. In many cases, residents interact more with your staff than they do with their own family members.

Smart leaders work to proactively build community in the dining room.

You and your staff have an important role to play in helping residents overcome loneliness and isolation and build a sense of belonging. Through hospitality, you can help build relationships one meal at a time.

Top donors, lobbyists to schmooze with RNC guests

(AP) ? Away from the televised political speeches and Mitt Romney's nomination at the Republican National Convention, energy, technology, transportation companies and others are hosting lavish parties for Republican leaders, politicians and Romney's top donors.

The behind-the-scenes parties, receptions and other exclusive events allow the Republican elite to mingle with donors and special interests in a way that's unusual even for the nation's capital. Dozens of events and scores of donors, lobbyists and corporate heads are all under one roof this week ? and under a loosely regulated setting distant from Washington.

That's as voters, who have long bristled at how special interests influence policymakers, will see only scripted, primetime speeches and Romney's acceptance remarks from their living rooms.

The influence of money in politics has received heightened scrutiny this election, as independent political groups have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to support their favored candidates. This is the first convention that will highlight the impact of these groups, including the presence of top GOP strategist Karl Rove of the "super" political committee American Crossroads.

The parties begin anew next week in Charlotte, N.C., home to the Democrats' national convention. The DNC said its gathering would be the first not to rely on special-interest money, although its organizers quietly set up a nonprofit entity to collect corporate cash.

Democratic donors complained early in President Barack Obama's administration that they were kept at arm's length. Since then, the president has opened his White House to contributors for events like state dinners and meetings with policy advisers.

Republican delegates this week will be starting their days with muffins, fresh fruit and egg sandwiches at receptions with company sponsorships. At one event Monday afternoon, delegates raved about hors d'oeuvres like truffles and caviar, along with champagne.

Attendees had a wide swatch of events to choose from: a Kid Rock concert on Wednesday, a "Back to the Reagan '80s" reception on Thursday by the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation or a "Wheels Up" party on Friday hosted in part by the National Energy Institute and Citizens United, the conservative organization behind the namesake 2010 Supreme Court case that loosened restrictions on money in politics.

As well, corporations with business before the federal government ? including those with major financial interests at stake ? are throwing their own events for delegates and attendees. In some cases, the parties blend the agendas of both corporate and media hosts that have some symbiotic interests in Washington's halls of power.

Among those sponsoring events in Tampa are Anheuser-Busch, the St. Louis-based producer of Budweiser and other beer brands; pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. and the Lifetime Television Network. Elliott Management Corp. hedge fund co-founder Paul Singer, who gave $1 million to a super PAC backing Romney, is also co-sponsoring an event aimed at gay Republicans.

Another host is the Personal Care Products Council, sponsor of a "Cocktail and Cosmetics" reception. One of the council's members is Utah-based Nu Skin Enterprises, a personal care and dietary supplements firm whose vice chairman, Steven J. Lund, was linked to $2 million in donations to the same Romney-leaning super PAC, Restore Our Future.

A "Nightly Lounge" scheduled all week in Tampa is hosted by Politico, the Washington-focused web news operation. The events, which will also be held at the Democratic convention next week, are co-sponsored by defense industry giant BAE Systems, technology designer Intel Corp., liquor seller Diageo and the Coca-Cola Co.

Politico is trying to deepen its news and politics coverage and win more customers for its specialized subscription services. Politico's executive director of events, Beth Lester Sidhu, said the parties were conceived as a "live extension of our journalistic mission."

BAE Systems Inc. was ranked by the General Services Administration as the 10th largest defense contractor in 2011 with $6.8 billion in awards ? a rank undiminished even after its British parent firm agreed to pay $79 million in fines that same year for civil arms export violations. Just last week, the firm won back nearly the same amount ? $78 million? for a new government contract to produce platforms for U.S. ship-based vertical launching missile systems.

Intel, the multinational semiconductor chip firm based in Silicon Valley, has spent $1.7 million already this year on lobbying in the Senate and House in favor of lowering the corporate tax rate and backing the Trans Pacific Partnership free trade agreement and for removing caps on foreign workers' visas.

"The policy debates that go on are really important to American businesses," Intel spokeswoman Lisa Malloy said. "These are important issues and they really impact our business and we really wanted to be in the middle of it."

British-based Diageo, owner of Captain Morgan rum and other liquor items, spent $1.07 million this year lobbying ? partly to keep in place tax breaks for spirits shipped to the U.S. from the U.S. Virgin Islands. And Coca-Cola has spent more than $2.8 million in lobbying this year, pressing for soft drinks to be kept at school cafeterias and to lower corporate tax rates, and opposing laws that would tax beverages to pay for waste water treatment.

A Coca Cola spokeswoman, Nancy Carlson Bailey, said the firm's role was "primarily focused on supporting the respective host committees."

Elsewhere at the convention, the Arkansas GOP delegation was feted to a welcome dinner at a renowned Cuban restaurant in nearby Ybor City. Former Arkansas governor and presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee stopped by, as did representatives of retail giant Wal-Mart, headquartered in the state. Chevron was behind a Mississippi delegation event Monday, where members of Congress and former Gov. Haley Barbour made appearances.

Tropical Storm Isaac, which led Republicans to cancel their Monday convention session, prompted changes in some events but not others. Tuesday's planned panel discussion on "The Millennial Impact on the Youth Vote" was cancelled while a related cocktail reception went on as planned.

Since touching down in Tampa, Wisconsin delegate Jeff Johns has had a full plate of social events. There have been country club luncheons, a welcome event organized by the convention host committee and gatherings featuring prominent officials and staged by companies with hometown connections like Miller-Coors.

"All the VIPS are in the room. You get to mingle with them," Johns said Monday. "Here it's like going out with your college friends to a tavern ? except there's a lot of free Miller beer."

Extract in Herbal Tea May Kill Breast Cancer Cells

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom?Drinking herbal tea made from the plant Fagonia cretica, also known as Virgin's Mantle, may help combat breast cancer, according to a new study published in the journal PLoS ONE. Patients who have taken the plant extract have reported it does not appear to generate any of the serious common side effects associated with other cancer treatments, such as loss of hair, drop in blood count or diarrhea.

Scientists at Aston University and Russells Hall Hospital conducted tests of the plant extract, which is found in arid, desert regions of Pakistan, India, Africa and parts of Europe, and discovered it kills cancer cells without damage to normal breast cells in laboratory conditions. The scientists hope to identify which element or elements of the plant are responsible for killing the cancer cells with the goal to eventually begin trails with human cancer patients.

?More research is needed to establish? the role of the extract in cancer management and it now needs to be demonstrated that this extract is as effective in killing cancer cells inside the body as it is within laboratory," the scientists said.

Obese and overweight women face increased risk of recurrence of most common type of breast cancer

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Extra pounds -- even within the overweight but not obese range -- are linked to a higher risk of recurrence of the most common type of breast cancer despite optimal cancer treatment, according to a new study published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The study's results suggest that extra body fat causes hormonal changes and inflammation that may drive some cases of breast cancer to spread and recur despite treatment.

Women who are obese when they are diagnosed with breast cancer have an increased risk of dying prematurely compared with women of normal weight. In this new study, Joseph Sparano, MD, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Montefiore Medical Center, in Bronx, NY, and his colleagues across the US cancer cooperative groups compared the health outcomes of obese and overweight patients with others in a large group of women with stage I-III breast cancer who had participated in three National Cancer Institute-sponsored treatment trials led by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (now part of the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group). All of the trials (E1199, E5188, and E3189) required participants to have normal heart, kidney, liver, and bone marrow function, thereby excluding patients with other significant health issues. As a result, researchers were able to disentangle the influence of obesity from other factors affecting cancer recurrence and survival.

The researchers found that increasing body mass index -- a measure of the body's fat content -- significantly increased women's risk of cancer recurrence and death, despite optimal treatment including chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. There was a stepwise relationship between increasing body mass index and poor outcomes only in women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, the most common type of breast cancer that accounts for approximately two-thirds of all breast cancer cases in the United States and worldwide.

"We found that obesity at diagnosis of breast cancer is associated with about a 30 percent higher risk of recurrence and a nearly 50 percent higher risk of dea

Make ahead of time so you can have plenty on hand for snacking!

Directions

  1. Begin by popping the kernels in a popcorn popper. Some poppers require oil, others use only hot air.
  2. Follow the manufacturer?s instructions; for the recipes here, pop 1/2 cup popcorn kernels total. You may have to work in batches.
  3. Line 2 large sheet trays with waxed paper; set aside.
  4. Melt butter in a medium pot over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, agave, curry powder, and salt; bring to a rolling boil, stirring constantly.
  5. Continue to boil, without stirring, 4 minutes; remove pot from heat and carefully stir in vanilla and baking soda until well combined.
  6. Place popcorn in a large bowl. Working quickly, pour hot caramel over popcorn and use a spoon to coat evenly.
  7. Transfer to reserved sheet trays and spread out in an even layer.
  8. Set aside to cool completely, and then serve.

Remember to wipe the bowl and spoons with a paper towel dipped in oil so the caramel doesn?t stick. Turn on your television and watch your favorite movies with the whole family while enjoying this yummy snack. After all, who doesn?t love caramel popcorn with a twist?

Darke County Parks programs are designed to engage, inform and ...

BY JOY ROSEBERRY

ASST. MANAGING EDITOR

DARKE COUNTY--The first Darke County Parks levy was passed in 1994 and part of the promise of that passage was the construction of a facility to be used as a nature education center, community center for non-profits and government meeting space.

In 1997, the Nature Center at Shawnee Prairie was opened, a director, office manager and staff of Naturalist Educators were hired and programs began.

?Those first programs were a general walk through of the parks,? said Roger Van Frank, Darke County Parks current director. ?They involved identifying or inventories of species.?

Today, camps, programs, classes and workshops run the gamut from backcountry survival to making maple syrup to hummingbird banding. And more.

Today, basic skills are lost to much of society and Darke County Parks has developed many workshops and classes to fill that gap with Outdoor Skills Development programs.

The classes are ?ever evolving,? according to Senior Naturalist Robb Clifford. ?We try to offer programs and workshops that get back to arts of the past that are slowly disappearing.?

For instance, last month guests learned to make soap, could take a workshop on Fly Tying, spend an afternoon kayaking or canoeing, and top off the summer with a campout.

In the next couple of months, visitors can take part in a ?Hands on Herbal? workshop, or learn the very basic skill of fire starting ? without matches and upcoming are knitting classes and a fall gardening seminar. It?s not unusual to see a Dulcimer Class or Open Hearth Cooking on the calendar as well.

Visitors can ?come and sit a spell? at concerts, movies and? tours of the Log House. And if you don?t want to sit, take part in Bike to Health rides and Early Morning Discovery Hikes.

KIDS? PROGRAMS AND CAMPS

?The kids are the stewards of tomorrow,? states Van Frank. ?We want nature and our parks to be part of their life.? Striving to make kids programming a vital? of part of Darke County Parks, the following sessions are offered:

* Parent and Preschooler Adventures, a series of monthly, hour-long programs designed to give parents (or grandparents, or babysitters) an opportunity to investigate nature through hands-on activities, hikes, stories, songs and take-home projects. ?Little Explorers? classes, are designed for? 2-3 year olds and ?Seedling? classes are designed for 4-5 year olds. Worms, butterflies, crawfish, nuts, trees and plants are just a small example of wonder the little ones can explore.

* Park P.A.L.S. is designed for 6-9 years olds, with the mission to develop future earth stewards through meaningful educational opportunities and hands on experiences. A few of the areas explored by these kids include mammals, night critters, stream quality management, and wildflowers.

* Junior Naturalists is a series of programs designed to give 10-12 year olds an introduction to natural resource management. Hikes, work projects and independent study are all part of the program. A few?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????of the topics covered include tree identification, winter survival, and bird breeding.

According to Senior Naturalist Robb Clifford, the Junior Naturalist classes were added later than the others because those who had enjoyed Parent and Preschooler Adventures and Park P.A.L.S. wanted to continue. Even now, the kids always ask for something in the next age range, but says Clifford, ?we ask them to take part in the adult programs. It?s time for them to move on.?

However, older kids, ages 13-15 can take advantage of summer camp, with Extreme Adventures, which this summer, included zip-lining, overnight camping and kayaking.

Camps which included an overnight stay were also held for kids ages 8-12 (Backyard Survival) and ages 10-12 (Paddling, Hiking and Camping).

The younger kids, 6-7, and 8-9, took advantage of Summer Day Camps.

?The dedication of the staff is extraordinary. They have to love what they are doing to pass it along to the kids. That they have the trust of families to drop their kids off for camp and for overnighters, proves we are doing something right,? said Van Frank.

Darke County Parks has worked tirelessly in preparing Nature?s Classroom, environmental education programs designed to enhance and supplement Ohio?s science curriculum. Each program topic addresses current ODOE Science Grade Level indicators and the Science Benchmarks by Academic Content Standards.

The program involves class field trips to Shawnee Prairie and a classroom visit by a Parks? Naturalist.

During the 2011-2012 school year, 5-7,000 school age kids visited the preserve (this number includes the children?s programs).

However, due to cutbacks, some schools have not been able to take a field trip to the prairie. Hopefully, park personnel will be able to get to more schools, offering a kind of ?Classroom in a Box.? Added Van Frank, ?we need to get to the schools. It will be more of an expense for us, but I feel that?s part of our mission.?

Programs can also be adapted for scouts and other groups as well.

Right now the Nature Center is home to Old Thyme Gardeners, Darke County Photo Club, Darke County Birders Club, and Darke County Canoe and Kayak Club. As well as hosting meetings, these groups also offer workshops and programs throughout the year.

The Greenville Art Guild holds an exhibit every fall.

Families have come to expect Darke County Parks to have the programs they want. Said Van Frank, ?we try to engage every person who comes in here. You don?t have to come for a program, you can just come and visit. We want everyone who visits to build us into their routine.?

********************

* Joining Van Frank and Clifford are Naturalist/Coordinator Laura Schwieterman, Naturalist Erica Dickey, Office Manager Deb Shiverdecker, Manager of Parks Maintenance Operations Nathan Epperly, Parks Maintenance Chris Supinger, and a tremendous amount of dedicated volunteers who make it all possible.

*The Nature Center located at Shawnee Prairie Preserve (4267 OH-502, Greenville) is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Restrooms and water fountains are accessible during business hours, as well as educational displays, live animal displays, nature reference library, bird observation area, and nature gift shop.

*Nonprofit organizations may reserve the Nature Center's assembly room, classroom, or meeting room for morning, afternoon, and evening meetings. Room rentals are also available for private parties.

******************

Volunteers are needed for Darke County Parks? annual Prairie Days Festival on Sept. 29 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and? Sept. 30 (noon- 5 p.m.) at Shawnee Prairie Preserve.?

Assistance is needed with pioneer activities and crafts (candle dipping, tussie mussies, tin-smithed lanterns, pioneer hats, sewing bean bags and rope making, etc.), setting up exhibits, stirring apple butter, cooking over the hearth in the Log House and lots more!?

If interested, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at lschwieterman@darkecountyparks.org or call Laura at the Nature Center, 548-0165. ? A Prairie Days Workshop will be held Sept. 22 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for those interested in volunteering. Please RSVP if you are planning on attending a workshop).? For more information, visit? www.darkecountyparks.org.

Butterfly Day: Kids will paint a flower pot, and along with the adults,??view??butterfly exhibits and displays and??take part in other hands-on activities during Butterfly Day, Sept. 1, 1-4 p.m., at the Nature Center. Take time to visit the Butterfly Tent, housing several common species found in Darke County and tour the gardens to learn which plants will attract more butterflies to your backyard. Butterfly Day is FREE!

Three-way battle expected in Greyhound Ownership A3/A4 Novice 750

A tough fight amongst greyhounds is expected in the Greyhound Ownership A3/A4 Novice 750 at Harold?s Cross in Ireland on Monday, August 27, 2012. The winner of the Grade OR event will bag a cash prize of ?255 in the end.

The stamina of all participants will be put to a stern test in the race, as the overall distance to cover for them will be 750 yards. The action is scheduled to start at 21:25 GMT and the spectators will definitely be looking forward to it.

It will be an extremely difficult thing for the punters to choose their favourite today, as none of the runners seem to have an advantage over the other. This will make the competition interesting in the end.

The bookmakers also expect a nail biting encounter, thus they have given equally good odds to Samms Dream Boy, Knockmant Tily and Nametab Avatar. All three of them are decent runners and will not make life easy for each other. However, they have been struggling for consistency, which will out a doubt over their ability to shine at Harold?s Cross.

Out of the above mentioned greyhounds, Samms Dream Boy has been fighting for victories regularly, but he has been unable to take the top spot on most of the occasions, which is not a positive sign.

The J. Hand?s trainee has not won a single race out of his previous five outings, which shows that he is not very much confident right now. He will need a special effort to claim victory in the end.

On the other hand, Knockmant Tily has got a lot of talent, but she has been unable to display it at this level. She started off her career on a positive note, winning a couple of back-to-back events, but her form has dipped a lot since then. She finished fourth in her most recent outing and will need a much better effort than that in order to challenge her rivals.

Nametab Avatar will have a slightly better chance of winning the Greyhound Ownership A3/A4 Novice 750, as he is carrying the winning momentum right now. However, he too lacks the ability to win races with consistency and will not find things easy at the end of the day.

Trial Verdict Could Benefit Samsung More Than Apple, Blogs Say

Despite winning more than $1 billion in its trial against Samsung, Apple's victory may backfire.

[More from Mashable: Apple v. Samsung Juror Says Emails Were ?Most Damning? [REPORT]]

At least that's according to a blog post by Enrique Gutierrez, chief technology officer of Digithrive, a Los-Angeles based Internet development and design firm.

In a Saturday post on Google+, Gutierrez describes sitting in a Starbucks, and overhearing four separate groups of people make the same conclusion about the Apple-Samsung verdict: that the two companies are effectively one and the same.

[More from Mashable: Apple?s Big Win: The Best Thing to Ever Happen to Windows Phone]

"They don't know the details, they don't really care, what they know is Apple is saying that Samsung is the same as Apple," he writes. "And with one simple Google Search, you get prices that are basically half for what seems to be the same products."

The highly publicized trial involved Apple accusing Samsung of patent infringement.

Two of the four groups that Gutierrez encountered asked him about his Samsung QX410 laptop and Galaxy phone. One husband-and-wife duo expressed shock at the former's comparatively cheap retail price tag of $700.

The couple even considered returning their iPad after looking up Samsung's tablet online, according to the post.

"'Samsung's iPad is the same as Apple's iPad, and I paid how much for the Apple one? Honey, I told you they were a rip-off,'" the husband said.

Another man said the verdict made him "think twice" about the amount he paid for his MacBook.

In an ironic twist, Samsung's loss could be its gain, Gutierrez concludes: "Best billion dollar ad campaign Samsung ever had."

Noted tech expert Robert Scoble says the verdict also benefited Samsung, but for different reasons. On his Facebook page, Scoble says copying Apple was a smart business decision.

"I think this is actually a sizable win for Samsung. Why? It only cost $1 billion to become the #2 most profitable mobile company," he writes.

Do you think the trial verdict actually helps Samsung? Tell us in the comments below.

New York Senator Calls Out Lil Wayne, Demands Apology

In a recent interview with MTV, Lil Wayne - who spent 10 months in Riker's Island on weapons charges in 2010 - made it very clear, telling the network: "I don't like New York."

And apparently that was all it took for New York State Senator Malcolm A. Smith to hold a press conference in Times Square and call out the rapper for daring to diss his city.

Yes, folks, it's election season.

"I take strong exception to the words 'I don't like New York,'" said Smith, directing his comments at Lil Wayne. "You don't have to sell your products here. And perhaps we won't come to your concerts."

Smith was born and raised in the city responsible for such hip hop stars as Russell Simmons, Ja Rule and Young MC; and in a statement to E! News, he added to his rebuke:

"Millions of New Yorkers listen to his music every day. His comments outraged his local fans and residents. The group today will be demanding an apology of the hip-hop star. Lil Wayne has had misfortune in New York with recent gun charges and a jail sentence."

Along those lines, Smith says he'd love to meet with the artist to discuss "how to stop gun violence in cities." And he'd love to hear a few certain words at that meeting:

"We're prepared to forgive Lil Wayne if in fact he makes a sincere apology," the politician said.

What do you think? Should Lil Wayne apologize?

US astronaut Neil Armstrong dies

The BBC's Pallab Ghosh, who interviewed Armstrong, says he had an ''ice cool attitude'' which made him an excellent astronaut

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died aged 82.

A statement from his family says he died from complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.

He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

US President Barack Obama said Amstrong was "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time".

Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.

Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

'Reluctant hero'

Mr Aldrin told the BBC's Newshour programme: "It's very sad indeed that we're not able to be together as a crew on the 50th anniversary of the mission? [I will remember him] as a very capable commander."

Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.

Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.

Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000, in a rare public appearance.

In a statement, his family praised him as a "reluctant American hero" who had "served his nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut".

The statement did not say where Armstrong died.

He had surgery to relieve four blocked coronary arteries on 7 August.
